Summer 2023

Toulouse, France
Engineering in the Home of Airbus (July 9July 29, 2023)

The Summer of 2023, I'll be heading on a High School Summer Abroad Trip with CIEE to Toulouse, France, the European capital of air and space industries and a hub for engineering and innovation. My goal is to pursue my passion of Aerospace Engineering and witness the innovations in the field, such as supersonic airliners, rockets, and space stations.

I'll gather all the insight I can from the engineers, as I aim to address global and local challenges through Engineering, like sustainable transportation or the energy crisis.

Of course, I also hope to explore a country (and continent!) outside my own. I'll be staying in Inla ville rose—“the pink city,” as Toulouse is known due to the color of its buildings—and get a taste of southern France, its food, and culture. I'll also be exploring Carcassonne, a medieval fortified city and World Heritage site, to hike through the French countryside, and more.

Spring 2023

Costa Rica
Biodiversity, Peace, & Wellness (March 4 – March 12, 2023)

The Spring of 2023, I traveled to Central America to experience the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. Through scientific observation, outdoor adventure, and immersion in the region, I spent time near the ocean, mountains, volcanoes, and national parks to deepen my understanding of the flora and fauna and how they relate to human and global well-being.

Starting in the capital city of San José, I gained a deeper understanding of the intersection of culture and biodiversity with visits to local farms, markets, and gardens. I then headed to the coast, with a stop at Poas volcano, before exploring several national parks to hike, observe tidal pools, snorkel, swim, and practice beach yoga. My journey culminated at Campanario Research Station where I learned about the scientific research projects aimed at exploring and cataloging the biodiversity of the fauna in the Osa region. Throughout the trip, I documented my observations and thoughts in a field journal and returned to Deerfield with a deeper appreciation of biodiversity, conservation, and my role as a traveler, student, and global citizen.
